February, 2016

We have finally finished first semester and the students are relieved to have the first half of their school year completed. Grace Junior/Senior High School continues to improve its programs and practices and we have been excited about all that is happening at our school. The following are a few of the highlights for the first half of the school year:

  1. The junior high music program is becoming stronger and stronger as 7th grade students take music classes for the entire school year. A record number of junior high students attended the music clinic at Marsh Valley and Mrs. Buxton reports that the training was excellent.
  2. We are beginning the second semester of our new junior high “Careers” class and are grateful for Mr. Williamson and Mrs. McGregor’s efforts to make this class experiential for the students. We would also like to express our gratitude to all of the parents and community members who are participating in the class by coming to do career presentations and chaperoning our students as they explore different career areas.
  3. Our new AG teacher, Darryl Wadsworth, has helped the construction students build a new storage shed during first semester and this experience has been a great educational opportunity for them. His welding students are also renovating the metal shop area and building new welding booths! We appreciate the many different skills that Mr. Wadsworth has brought to our school.
  4. A popular new elective course is “Outdoor Economics” taught by Mr. Manhart, who teaches the students wilderness skills, cooking skills and even how to build a fishing rod. This course is currently available for both junior high and high school students.
  5. Congratulations to the Grace High School Chapter of Business Professionals of America! Under the direction of Spencer Christensen, approximately 35 students competed at this year’s regional competition and 27 students qualified to compete at the state competition in Boise in March; which is over ¾ of our BPA chapter! The GHS chapter of BPA is the second largest chapter in district five, right behind Highland High School in Pocatello.
  6. The Serendipity Show Choir will be traveling to Southern California during spring break to perform at Disneyland and participate in workshops there. This tour follows impressive performances by the choir at Temple Square during the Christmas season.
  7. Also during December, the GHS varsity basketball teams (boys and girls) had the opportunity to play in the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. The atmosphere was incredible and both teams defeated their opponents.
  8. GHS now offers university credit for English 101 because of the qualifications of our new English teacher, Mrs. Tolman. We are grateful for this new addition to the other dual credit opportunities currently available to our students and taught by Dr. Millward in the areas of Calculus and Statistics.

Also academically, Grace High School students earned some of the highest Language Arts scores in the state of Idaho on the state’s standardized test (ISAT) administered last Spring. Other school districts from around the state have been in contact with our school district this year to see what we are doing to prepare our students so well. The answer, of course, is in the quality of the teachers we have at GHS. All of our teachers, regardless of their content area, continually work to assist our students with their reading and writing skills.

There is so much more that I could report about what’s happening at GHS. I would just like to say thank you to our teachers, the students, their families, the school board, and the patrons who support GHS. It is because of all of you that we have the “Best School in Idaho”!
